AUSTIN, Texas — Since 1951, many Austin ISD parents have said Maplewood Elementary School in East Austin is the cornerstone of the Cherrywood neighborhood.

“It’s a gem of a school. It’s part of our neighborhood,” said Nicole Holle, a Maplewood Elementary parent.

Holle is one of two parents who has helped organize a “Save Maplewood Elementary” concert. The line up includes a number of local bands and speakers.

“We really wanted to bring the community together and help raise awareness about why we think Maplewood should not be closed, and music is a great way to do that and reach the broader community,” said Briana Purser.

Both Holle and Purser said they were shocked to learn about Maplewood being placed on the district’s closure list. They believe the school record of academic excellence speaks for itself. According to the Texas Education Agency, Maplewood received an “A” accountability rating for this year. Holle said this is an achievement you lift up, not tear down.

“Why would you shut down something that’s working so well? The whole process feels like it’s buildings over kids,” said Holle.

Under the proposed plan, students at Maplewood Elementary would be reassigned to Campbell Elementary School. Both parents said there are still a lot of unanswered questions with the Board of Trustees set to vote on a final plan on November 20, 2025. Among those unanswered questions is how the district plans to attract and retain families.

“This plan is only going to further drive families out of the district, which is then negating savings, and then we’re right back here a few years from now,” said Purser.

Both believe there needs to be creative solutions that are going to help the schools while making sure every kid is accounted for and not left behind.

Parents have also formed a grassroots movement named “Save Maplewood,” arguing the district is not listening to their concerns.

Austin ISD Superintendent Matias Segura is set to visit and meet with parents at Maplewood Wednesday morning as part of his tour of schools on the district’s proposed consolidation plan.

Wednesday night’s concert is happening at Cherrywood Coffeehouse, 1400 E 38th 1/2 St, from 5 to 8 p.m.
