MINERAL WELLS, Texas (CNN NEWSOURCE) – Several people were injured after a tornado ripped through Mineral Wells, Texas—about 80 miles west of Dallas—Tuesday night, city officials said.
“Y’all pray for everybody in Mineral Wells, Texas, guys. It’s crazy out here right now,” one resident said in video recorded during the storm.
Mineral Wells Mayor Regan Johnson said the community is dealing with destruction unlike anything she’s seen locally. “This is the first time that I have seen or known about this magnitude of destruction in this community,” Johnson said.
The city’s fire chief said five people were injured and taken to the hospital, and several others were treated for minor injuries at the scene.
Johnson said officials were thankful the tornado was not deadly. “First and foremost I think we are most grateful there was no loss of life yesterday when you see the destruction that is here,” she said.
Officials said the tornado damaged multiple homes and hit part of the city’s industrial area. Mineral Wells Police Chief Tim Denison said some residents were forced from their homes.
“We’ve had multiple homes severely damaged and some people are displaced,” Denison said. He added, “We’re going to get through this and whatever we can do to assist them and help them.”
The tornado was part of a multi-day severe weather outbreak affecting the Midwest and South. Tuesday’s storms also produced large hail in multiple states, including grapefruit-sized hail near Godley, Texas, and tennis ball- to baseball-sized hail in Springfield, Missouri, which damaged vehicles and knocked down power poles. In southern Oklahoma, a possible tornado damaged buildings, including some mobile homes, and significantly damaged powerlines.
Forecasters with the National Weather Service office in Fort Worth said a survey team confirmed the Mineral Wells tornado caused EF3 damage with estimated winds up to 145 miles per hour.
