EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/ CBS4) — El Paso drivers are being urged to plan ahead as a packed weekend of major events is expected to bring heavy traffic and tight parking across the Borderland.

Two sold-out BTS shows at the Sun Bowl are expected to be a major congestion point, with traffic likely around UTEP and nearby roadways, including Mesa Street, Schuster, and I-10 near the Sun Bowl exit, especially before and after the concerts.

There are five main gates into the Sun Bowl, and parking is expected to be limited.

First-come, first-served lots are expected to fill quickly, with long lines anticipated for campus parking and heavy foot traffic around the stadium. Parking spaces are set to open as early as 8 a.m., with most ticket holders expected to arrive at 3 p.m.

Rideshare and public transportation are being promoted as alternatives, including a designated rideshare lot for drop-offs by Lyft and Uber.

The city is also adjusting traffic signal timing to help manage the surge.

“We’re going to change the settings along Mesa, work with TxDOT, executive, you know, coming up Mesa away from I-10, and then the other corridors that come into the Sun Bowl area, emergency things,” a city representative said.

Crowds are also expected in other parts of the city, including areas near Ascarate Lake, San Jacinto Plaza and the El Paso Convention Center, particularly in the late afternoon and evening when multiple events overlap. Other events happening this weekend include Michelada Fest, Sol Summit, and Comic Con.

Drivers are being advised to allow extra time, consider alternate routes or rideshare options, and use caution.

There are no major TxDOT closures expected over the weekend.
