NEW BRAUNFELS- The city of New Braunfels implemented paid parking downtown in July, generating over $80,000 in revenue. However, many residents believe they should be exempt from the hourly rates and have started a petition. “We got to support the residents and the locals as well,” said one resident, Mirenna. The petition argues that residents feel “double taxed” through city taxes and parking fees, which cap at $10 per day. It calls for a “parking pass” allowing free parking for up to three hours. Some residents claim people are avoiding parking downtown altogether.

Justin Mirenna, manager at 2 Tart Bakery downtown, noted, “I know a lot of this was implemented right at the end of summer while we’re slowing down.” He hasn’t noticed a significant change in clientele but is unsure if it’s due to the parking changes or a seasonal lull. “Hopefully it’s a trial period and we figure out something that works a little better,” he added, expressing support for a parking pass or discounted parking for residents.

Conversely, a manager at Callahan’s Pub expressed satisfaction, noting that the changes have expedited deliveries and takeout orders. The city acknowledged receiving both positive feedback and concerns. “The City is aware of both positive feedback and concerns from community members…staff is evaluating the feasibility of a prepaid session card or voucher as part of a councilmember’s suggestion,” a city representative said. Proposed changes are expected to be presented to the council by the end of the year.
