There will be protests downtown in San Antonio on Friday, May 1, for May Day, a global day of solidarity and protests on behalf of workers, immigrant families and people affected by war and international sanctions.
A number of rallies and marches are planned with workers’ rights groups, local labor unions and other community organizations across the country, including in the Alamo City.
Here is what to know about May Day in San Antonio.
May Day, also known as International Workers’ Day, is an annual celebration honoring the history of workers’ rights movements. Celebrated on May 1, organizers often call on community members not to attend work, school or spend money as a way to demonstrate the impact of the working class’ power.
San Antonio Alliance, a labor union, says the day is about the struggle to build a city that “works for the many — not the wealthy few.”
“Workers over Billionaires,” a recent Instagram post by the organization said.
In San Antonio, several groups will observe the day by protesting against the controversial Eastside ICE detention warehouse amid documented allegations of ICE’s mistreatment of children and families.
“Take part in this powerful global day of action with millions of other working people to reject the billionaire agenda of war, repression, and attacks on working families,” the Party for Socialism and Liberation San Antonio said in Instargam post on Wednesday, April 29. The group is organizing a downtown protest on Friday.
