Recording studios are ripe for conflict, never mind if the musicians are romantically involved. Fleetwood Mac famously rode tensions among the band’s two couples during the making of 1977’s Rumours to superstar status. Inspired by the notorious sessions, Stereophonic takes the audience inside a fictionalized version of the fraught process.
A play with music rather than a full-blown musical — the cast mostly performs snippets of songs by former Arcade Fire member Will Butler — it received a record 13 Tony nominations in 2024, winning five.
The characters, created by playwright David Adjmi, mimic the Fleetwood Mac lineup and relationships. The bassist is married to the keyboard player/vocalist, and the other two singers are longtime partners. Stereophonic takes place entirely in the studio where the band is struggling to make a new album.
Touring for the first time, the production includes Dallas native Claire DeJean, a graduate of Highland Park High School, as Diana. The show is making a local stop for five performances in three days, presented by the AT&T Performing Arts Center.
