A favorite event set to take over the local sky has been canceled due to severe weather slamming the San Antonio area.
Around 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, Joint Base San Antonio announced that Military Appreciation Day at the Great Texas Airshow would not go on due to the forecast. According to JBSA, the event would have featured aerial practice demonstrations and a STEM Fair with cyber events and other activities for Department of War ID-holders.
“Due to forecasted inclement weather, Military Appreciation Day at the Great Texas Airshow scheduled for tomorrow, May 1, has been canceled,” the post on X reads. “We appreciate your understanding as safety is our top priority. The air show is expected to proceed on Saturday and Sunday.”
According to the post, the main event is still expected to go on. Saturday, May 2, and Sunday, May 3, will bring the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and the U.S. Army Parachute Team to JBSA-Randolph. The event is free to attend and open to the public. Visitors will be able to watch C-17, KC-46 and F-22 demonstration teams as well as other displays — however, the event website notes that planned acts are subject to change.
At the time of writing, the National Weather Service’s local Austin/San Antonio office has issued a flood warning through 9 p.m. on May 1. Additionally, a flood advisory and flash flood warning are in effect throughout the morning. Locals should exercise caution when traveling today, as the NWS says, “there is a potential for life-threatening flooding somewhere in the watch area. Excessive runoff may cause flooding in rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying, flood-prone areas. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. Low-water crossings may be flooded.”
