In the first week of October, the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) began construction of the San Antonio Solar Plant in the district of La Uruca, in the central canton of San José. It will be built on the site of the former thermal backup plant of the same name, which ceased operations in 2019.
The initial work involves temporary installations, dismantling existing structures, and subsequent earthmoving. With 21,300 panels, this park will contribute 10.3 megawatts of clean energy capacity to the country. The investment will total $11.5 million, and commercial operation is scheduled to begin in August 2026.
San Antonio is the first of the solar projects developed by ICE as part of its updated 2024-2040 Electricity Generation Expansion Plan . It will be the second of the company’s own facilities to utilize photovoltaic energy (along with the Miravalles Solar Plant), which will be joined in the coming years by Abangares (Guanacaste) and Las Delicias (Puntarenas).
The design and construction were awarded to Ventus Colombia SAS, on an 11-hectare site. The ICE’s Directorate of Non-Regulated Services Management (DGSNR) will be responsible for the technical inspection and contract management. The plant will be connected to the La Caja Substation, located on the same property.
