The move comes as Spirit Airlines announced it is going out of business after 34 years and has “started an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately.” The airline also said on its website all flights even outside of Houston have been canceled.
At Bush Airport, meanwhile, Houston officials said all other airlines continue to operate normally and that carriers at Bush and Hobby will serve destinations similar to Spirit’s network, giving travelers other options and keep things running smoothly.
“Spirit Airlines made the decision to cease operations at Bush Airport, and we know that creates uncertainty for travelers. Our focus is on delivering clear information, compassionate support and a safe, seamless experience for everyone who walks through our doors,” Jim Szczesniak, director of aviation for Houston Airports said in a statement. “Houston Airports remains fully operational, and our teams are working together to guide passengers to the resources and airline options they need to continue their journeys.”
The shutdown follows a failed effort by the Trump administration to keep the airline from going under. The Associated Press reported that President Donald Trump floated the idea of a bailout as late as Friday afternoon had given Spirit a “final proposal” for a taxpayer-funded takeover.
Chron has also been following Spirit Airlines’ looming shutdown since mid-April. Even before filing for bankruptcy, the airline begun cutting flights out of Houston, operating fewer flights and reducing seat capacity year over year. When Chron reached out at the time, a Spirit Airlines spokesperson declined to comment, saying, “We don’t comment on market rumors and speculation. Our operations continue as normal.”
According to the Houston Airport System’s latest financial report, per the Houston Business Journal, Spirit accounted for more than 3.2 million passengers—or about 5.2 percent of the market share across Bush and Hobby—in the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2025.
For now, Houston travelers are encouraged to check Spirit’s website for information on re-bookings, refunds and customer communication.
