One of Houston’s more iconic eateries has shut down for good, and the announcement it made Friday shocked longtime fans.
House of Fries, a staple of Northwest Houston for a generation, closed on May 1. On the same day, it updated its Facebook page with the restaurant’s first post in nearly three years.
“Today is our last day,” started the post on May 1. “This city has been through some things over the years, and so have we. Through storms, through freezes, through everything in between, we showed up. And every single time, this community showed up right back. That is not something we take lightly.”
After operating several restaurants over 15 years, Joe and Myriam Nabulsi opened House of Fries in 2011 at 5322 Antoine Dr., close to Pinemont Drive in the Oak Forest neighborhood of Northwest Houston. And while it certainly had fries—including beef nacho fries, chicken fajita fries, Buffalo chicken fries and Philly cheesesteak fries—House of Fries was a full-service breakfast, lunch and dinner spot. Folks could stop by for breakfast tacos in the morning, then return in the afternoon for a double meat burger or signature ABC Burger (avocado, bacon, cheese).
Or maybe you’d want the OMG Burger, which featured a couple bacon fries sandwiched between two patties. Whatever you got, you had to get your fries battered for crispier texture.
“My daughter and I have many memories grabbing breakfast tacos before dropping her at OSL school around the corner,” said one Facebook user commenting in the closing announcement post. “Then grabbing dinner to go when picking her up after school.”
House of Fries is closing because the Nabulsis are finally ready to retire. In the Facebook post on May 1, the restaurant thanked longtime guests, former employees, and “everyone who ever left a kind word, drove across town for our loaded fries, told a friend about us, or just made us part of your weekly routine.”
