Green’s resolution alleges the post diminished the “dignity of the presidency” and brought “disrepute to the office.”
The filing references a controversial post by the president shared April 12 to Truth Social, which quickly drew widespread national backlash, even from some Christian allies of the Trump administration. It was later deleted, and Trump said it was intended to depict him as a doctor and not as a divine figure.
In late April, Green announced his plans to file a resolution condemning the president’s actions during remarks shared on the House floor. On April 29, he formally introduced the measure—and now he’s amplifying it on his socials.
The resolution calls out specific details of the post, like the white robe and the light radiating from Trump’s hand placed upon the head of a sick man. Green says the imagery is consistent with a traditional artistic portrayal of Jesus Christ performing acts of healing.
The resolution also argues other elements are historically used in religious art to signify divinity, holiness and sacred authority: the overall luminous glow, the floating background figures, the woman who appears to be praying beneath Trump.
Public commentary from religious leaders, political figures and members of the public “overwhelmingly described the image as portraying President Trump as Jesus Christ or as a ‘Christ-like figure,'” according to the resolution.
Green argues that while holding the nation’s highest office, Trump carries a heightened responsibility to respect the country’s diverse religious beliefs. The congressman says Trump should have known that using religious symbols for personal or political gain goes against the mutual respect and dignity of a pluralistic society.
“The President of the United States of America knew or should have known that, by portraying himself as Jesus Christ, he would be perceived as not only trivializing the most sacred figure in Christianity but also making a mockery of the faith, thereby inviting ridicule that diminishes the standing of the United States and its people on the world stage,” the resolution reads.
Among other allegations, the resolution argues that conduct of this nature undermines essential qualities of the office and erodes the respect the position is meant to command. It calls on the president to publicly acknowledge that depicting himself as Jesus Christ was disrespectful and offensive.
As of Sunday afternoon, President Trump had not publicly responded to the resolution or Green’s online post. The Trump administration has not responded to Chron’s request for comment.
