Investigators are in the area of TX-66 and Dairy Rd after a car collision led a person to try to steal multiple cars before being shot, according to authorities.
GARLAND, Texas — Garland police are investigating a fatal shooting this evening after a hit and run suspect reportedly tried to leave the scene of their accident by attempting to steal the wrong vehicle.
Authorities have told WFAA at the scene that the shooting death occurred due to a suspect who travelled on TX 66 Sunday afternoon and became involved in a multi-vehicle accident at approximately 3:30 p.m., hitting two other vehicles, according to Garland police.

While fleeing the accident scene, the driver of the vehicle stopped at a gas station near the intersection of 66 and Dairy Road. In the parking lot of the gas station, they tried getting into multiple parked vehicles but failed. Later the crash suspect crossed Dairy Road on foot and entered the parking lot of a convenience store.
The crash suspect came across the driver of a white Chevrolet Impala in the convenience store parking lot and engaged in a physical confrontation that stemmed from his trying to take the vehicle, which was occupied by several children and two adult females along with the driver.
Police confirm that a shooting incident occurred at the Impala after a struggle between the crash suspect and the owner of the Impala — the crash suspect was shot and later declared deceased after being transported to a local hospital. No other injuries were reported.
Police say they will not charge the Impala driver with any offense after he remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. The crash suspect and shooting victim, described as a Hispanic male, has not been identified at this time.
The investigation into this incident remains ongoing. The identity of the shooting victim will be released pending notification of next of kin.
