H-E-B may be Texans’ favorite grocery store, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for competition. Despite being headquartered in California, Trader Joe’s has been expanding across Texas in the last year, including opening a new outpost in San Antonio, but now the company is reinvesting in its existing Alamo City stores.
The Trader Joe’s at 403 N. Loop 1604 W, San Antonio, TX 78232 is set to receive $2.5 million upgrades later this summer, as outlined by a Texas Department of Licensing and Registration (TDLR) filing. One of only three Trader Joe’s within San Antonio, the Loop 1604 TJ’s is about to celebrate its 12th year serving the Alamo City.
The $2.5 million upgrade will see the addition of new refrigeration and freezer cases, changing refrigeration from gas to CO2 and adding new bridge, chickstands, crew restroom and walk-in cooler, according to the TDLR. Construction is aiming to start on June 1 and is expected to be completed by December 1, however all TDLRs are subject to change without notice, so that timeline could fluxuate.
San Antonio is home to three of those Trader Joe’s stores, located at 11745 I-10 W, San Antonio, TX 78230; 403 N. Loop 1604 W., San Antonio, TX 78232; and 350 East Basse Road, San Antonio, TX 78209.
