EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A 39-year-old man was sentenced to 30 years in prison after an El Paso jury found the man guilty of continuous sex abuse of a child on Friday, May 1, according to a news release by the El Paso District Attorney’s Office.
Bernardo Gomez is not eligible for parole and will have to serve the entirety of his sentence, the DA’s Office said. Additionally, he will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

In March 2020, a victim, who was 11 at the time, told their mother that Gomez had sexually abused them over multiple years, from when the victim was in kindergarten and continuing through fifth grade.
The victim told investigators that the abuse began in New Mexico and continued in El Paso.
During the investigation, a second victim came forward and reported similar abuse by Gomez, the DA’s Office said.
Both victims testified at trial about the abuse they endured over several years. Text messages were introduced at trial that showed Gomez apologizing after being confronted by the victim’s mother.
“The victims in this case showed tremendous courage by coming forward and testifying about the abuse inflicted upon them,” DA James Montoya said. “Our Office continues to prioritize our oldest remaining cases for trial, and we are grateful for the jurors who answered the call for service, listened to the victims, and held the Defendant accountable for his heinous conduct.”
