While there may be summer-like days scattered across spring, but a rapid series of cold fronts is keeping things cool – even if it’s also bringing treacherous weather to the Lone Star State. Another burst of arctic air is set to sweep Texas next week, plummeting temperatures yet again.
After a week of severe weather, featuring record hail, flooding rains and a tornado, the sun finally broke through the clouds as the weekend came to a close for most Texans. But another creeping cold front will bring storm chances back to most major metros midweek.
On Tuesday, May 5, temperatures begin to dip in the Texas Panhandle, sinking from the steamy mid-80s back to the low-70s. They’ll continue to dip through Wednesday as thunderstorm chances climb to 30 to 50%.
“[Models] are hinting at a cold front moving into the northern combined Panhandles where showers and thunderstorms could develop,” the National Weather Service Amarillo office reported on Friday. “High temperatures behind the front mid week will drop back to near or even slightly below average.”
This cold front should reach North Texas, namely the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, by Wednesday. While it won’t hit as strong as it did last week, temperatures should finally dip back down after inching toward 90 in the start of the week.
“A cold front will arrive Wednesday, delivering cooler air to the region. Highs as we finish out the week will be in the upper 70s to mid 80s,” the NWS Dallas-Fort Worth office predicts.
While storm odds remain relatively low during the work week, hovering around 20% on Tuesday and Wednesday, the weather agency says an active weather pattern looms over the weekend forecast.
It’ll take a bit longer for South Central Texas cities, like San Antonio and Austin, to feel the impact of this cooler air. By Thursday, however, the Alamo City will finally feel a cooldown when afternoon highs drop from 90 degrees to the low 80s. Evenings should feel quite cool though, cooling down into the mid-60s.
Rain chances remain relatively low that far south however, with early predictions positing a roughly 20% chance on Wednesday and Thursday.
