SANTA FE, N.M. (KFOX14/CBS4) — Several schools in the Gadsden Independent School District were placed on safety status Tuesday morning as the district continued responding to a situation involving Santa Teresa Middle School.

In an update issued at 10:30 a.m., the district said Santa Teresa Elementary School and Desert View Elementary School were placed on hold as a precaution.

Santa Teresa High School, the Gadsden Administrative Complex, Riverside Elementary School and Riverside PreK were placed on secure status.

The district said all students and staff are safe. Families were asked not to go to campuses or call schools so staff can remain focused on student safety and operations.

On Hold (In Your Room or Area) means: “In Your Room or Area” and is the protocol used when it is necessary to keep hallways clear of occupants.

Secure (Get Inside. Lock Outside Doors) means: “Get Inside. Lock Outside Doors” and is the protocol used to safeguard people within the building.

The district said it will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.

The City of Sunland Park provided the following statement:

The City of Sunland Park is currently working with regional response partners and Gadsden ISD to investigate a reported threat at Santa Teresa Middle School.All students and staff are safe. In coordination with school officials, the campus and several nearby schools have been placed on a precautionary safety status. We ask the public to avoid the area of Santa Teresa Middle School and the surrounding campuses to allow emergency responders clear access. We kindly ask families to refrain from traveling to the schools at this time so that staff can remain focused on student safety.
