LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – What seemed to be just another day for Melissa Martinez, owner of Missy’s Resale Shop soon turned upside down after she said she received a call saying the door to her store was shattered.
“My heart just dropped, I rushed over here, got over here as fast as I could and I saw the door was open, and I just knew expensive stuff was going to be missing,” Martinez said.
Martinez said electronics, jewelry and other items were stolen, forcing her to take on unexpected repairs and losses.
“It’s all a little overwhelming, I never thought something like this could happen to me,” Martinez said.
Martinez started the shop five years ago to help community members find clothing, toys and other necessities at an affordable price.
“I first started my store because I was in a situation where I couldn’t provide for my kids, and I swore from that day that I would help the community as I possibly could, and that’s what this store is about,” Martinez said.
Despite the break-in, Martinez said she will continue to serve her community.
“I am going to continue with the food pantry, I am going to continue with the free clothes and shoes, I am going to help anybody that I can, I also have a free bin, so I throw clothes in there all the time, and anybody coming in who needs something, I tell them they can pick from the free bin,” Martinez said. “I am going to keep going no matter what, whether I stay here or move somewhere else.”
Martinez said hard times can make people feel alone or do things they know are not right, but asking for help can connect people with those ready to lend a helping hand.
“There are a lot of people here that no one knows about that do help the community, I ask everybody to spread the word, if they know somebody who is in need, to send them my way, tell them, hey go to Missy’s, Missy will help you,” Martinez said.
Anyone that would like to help Melissa and her shop, she says the shop accepts all donations, including monetary.
