Driver critically injured in crash with construction truck near Odem, DPS reports

A driver is in critical condition after crashing into a parked construction truck on I-37 near Odem

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A man is in critical condition following a major crash Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 37 and U.S. Highway 77 near Odem.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, troopers responded to the scene around 1 p.m. in an active construction zone connected to the Nueces River Bridge project.

DPS officials said the driver was attempting to take the exit onto U.S. 77 toward Odem but failed to navigate the curb correctly within the construction area.

 Investigators say the vehicle then crashed into an unoccupied construction truck that had been parked to help guide traffic through the work zone.

Sgt. Rob Mallory with DPS said the impact caused significant damage, and the driver was flown to a hospital by HALO-Flight in critical condition.

Drivers are being reminded to slow down, stay alert and follow all posted signs when traveling through construction zones. Work on the Nueces River Bridge project remains ongoing in the area.

The crash remains under investigation.
