HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Sam Houston men’s and women’s cross country teams head to the Conference USA Championships on Saturday.
 
The women’s 6,000-meter race will begin at 9:30 a.m. The men will take to the 8,000-meter race begins at 10:30 a.m.
 

Mario Ruiz led the men’s team in the regular season placing 10th in the Arturo Barrios Invitational and 46th in the Texas A&M Invitational. Ruiz averages a time of 24:07.15. Freshman Sophia Phillip led the women’s team placing first in the Prairie View Invitational and 42nd in the Texas A&M Invitational. Phillip continues to get her times better every race and averages a time of 19:33.33.
 
Last season, the men’s team finished fourth with an average time of 24:54.82 and qualified for NCAA South Central Regionals. Mario Ruiz looks to lead the team after coming in 16th with a time of 24:37.41 last year. The women’s team came in ninth place ahead of La Tech with an average time of 22:50.98. Ami Clark led the team placing 42nd with a time of 22:32.98.
