Lubbock High’s Rodriguez on team’s “non-conventional” approach needed against Amarillo High

  • October 30, 2025

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Going into Friday night’s game against the Amarillo High Sandies, Lubbock High head football coach Juan Rodriguez says his team will need to approach this matchup- from an ‘out of the box’ perspective.

“I think it’s one of those where you’ve got to talk to your kids, and you’ve got to make them be convinced of what we’re trying to accomplish. We’re not trying to score in the first play. We know that we’re not going to be able to stop them every single play, but we’re going to work on things to just build on little successes,” said Coach Rod, “And if we get them in third and long situations, we feel like that’s going to be a big win for us. If we can keep them from getting first downs or just a short field for that matter. If they can get second and long instead of second and two, I think we have an opportunity to do some of the things that we put in this week that could help us be successful.”

A win for the Westerners would be their first in district play. The game kicks off 7 p.m. at Dick Bivins Stadium in Amarillo.
