LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A pleasant break from the heat is on tap today across the South Plains beginning with a cold start to Thursday morning.

The coolest stretch came early Thursday, when unseasonably cold temperatures dipped into the lower 30s northwestern South Plains this morning. We had a Frost Advisory for the northwestern part of the region that was allowed to expire early, around 8 a.m., as tempertures warmed up.

Temperatures will rebound quickly Thursday afternoon under sunny skies, warming into the 70s for most locations. Winds will turn southwesterly later Thursday as warmer air moves back in. Thursday night will be milder, with lows generally in the upper 40s to mid-50s.

Heat builds heading into the weekend, with hot temperatures expected Friday and Saturday.

A passing front will knock temperatures down briefly on Sunday, but the cooldown won’t last long. Hot weather is expected to return Monday, and near-record high temperatures may be possible by the middle of next week.
