EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — The El Paso Independent School District said on Thursday that Franklin High School’s softball varsity coach, Leslie Miritello, has resigned from her coaching duties amid concerns from parents.
In a statement to KFOX14/CBS4, EPISD confirmed Miritello has resigned from her coaching position and that the district is aware of concerns raised about the softball program involving students and employees.
“El Paso ISD is aware of concerns raised regarding the Franklin High School softball program and takes all reports involving students and employees seriously. The district follows established procedures to review concerns thoroughly and appropriately.”
EPISD said it remains committed to “maintaining safe, supportive, and respectful learning environments for all students and student-athletes,” and that it will continue working closely with campus leadership to “ensure continuity for the softball program.”
Adding that “Because this is a personnel matter, the district cannot provide additional information.”
However, Miritello’s resignation follows concerns raised by some parents on Tuesday about Miritello’s position as coach.
According to the parents who spoke to KFOX14/CBS4, they have taken their concerns about Miritello to school administrators and district officials.
“We will take it to the district, and anywhere else that we have to,” one parent, Sirena Gutierrez, said.
While the exact concerns over Miritello remain unclear, KFOX14/CBS4 has reached out to the district for more information.
“We were hopeful that we would have a new softball coach who just focused on the program and the development of our daughters, and unfortunately, behind the scenes, that was not happening.” Ericka Lucero, parent of a current player, said.
