EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — El Paso Independent School District’s chief financial officer resigned on Thursday as the district works to address budget shortfalls and broader financial pressure.

EPISD announced the resignation of Chief Financial Officer Martha Aguirre on Thursday in a press release addressing the district’s financial efforts and staffing.

According to the district, Deputy Superintendent David Bates will oversee financial operations during the transition while the district begins searching for both an interim and permanent CFO.

The departure of Aguirre, who most recently served as the district’s interim superintendent, comes as the district is dealing with financial pressure like other districts across the state.

The district said it has looked for ways to cut costs, including offering early retirements and cutting positions next year.

According to EPISD, it has taken steps to strengthen the district’s financial position through an “operational efficiency effort and a central office reorganization” aimed at directing more resources to classrooms, student services, and school-level support.

The district said the work was part of the superintendent’s first 90-day plan.

As part of the reorganization, the district said it has streamlined central office operations through vacancy reductions, early retirement and separation incentives, the elimination of duplicative roles, and the evaluation of additional positions heading into the 2027-28 school year as part of a long-term financial stabilization plan.
