LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Makaly Peña is showing her strength.
The owner of Kaly’s Cakes and Sweets moved with her husband back to Lubbock in 2020. That’s when she found out she was pregnant with their first child, but the happy beginning for the new family turned to sadness when Peña learned she had a miscarriage at 14 weeks.
“I pretty much just went into darkness for a little while,” Peña said. “I just checked out of life. I didn’t know where to go from there.”
MaKaly Peña has seen her fair share of struggles as a mother and business owner. Through it all, she’s been able to persevere and display plenty of strength to other mothers out there.(Dylan Villa)
Peña thanks the Lubbock community for getting her back on her feet during this pivotal time in her life.
“I truly feel that they saved my life,” Peña said, “because when I was at a point where you think you’re going to have your whole future, you’re going to start with your family, and then you lose it. If you’re not close to God or don’t cling onto anything, it’s easy to say you’re just kind of done.”
Peña was given new life when found out she was pregnant with twin girls in 2022. That too became a hardship when her daughter Florence was born, but her second child was stillborn.
“Losing a baby and never getting to see the baby, and then losing a baby and having to hold the baby are two both very detrimental feelings, but they still feel equally lost,” Peña said. “I just missed out on their whole entire lives.”
When we last spoke with Peña, she was building her business back up again. Since then, her operation is busier than ever, and she’s welcomed a baby boy, Noah, to her family, who turns one later this month.
“He walks against things and he’ll let go or he’ll see a toy and he’s actively just playing with it,” Peña said. “He’ll realize all of a sudden he’s not holding onto anything and he’ll just do this little scream cause he’s like ‘I’m not holding onto anything.”
She says being a mom of two while running a business from her own home can be quite challenging, but she couldn’t be happier doing what she’s doing.
With Mother’s Day on the horizon, Peña believes things always get better and has a message for moms who might have a difficult weekend ahead.
“I would just say cling to the things you do have in life,” Peña said. “Always believe there’s something good for you, because God always wants good for you, and just watch your outlook. Keep a good outlook on life, because there’s always something beautiful that you can find in all of the darkness.”
