AUSTIN, Texas — Police and SWAT responded to an incident in South Austin near Ben White Boulevard and South First Street on Thursday, and police say a suspect is in custody for throwing objects down into the roadway.
In an evening media briefing, Officer Austin Zarling of the Austin Police Department (APD) said police responded around 12:40 p.m. to a call about someone throwing rocks or bricks onto Ben White from the overpass.
Officers found four victims of “deadly conduct” and four damaged vehicles. They also discovered the suspect, who barricaded themselves in an elevated position between the highway and the service road.
The police called in SWAT to extract the suspect and detain them.
According to a post from APD on social media, eastbound Ben White Boulevard was completely closed from South First Street to South Congress Avenue. The post also said South First Street was backed up in both directions because of the closures.
Officers are currently working to reopen the service road between South First Street and Congress Avenue.
This is a developing story.
