LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – With Mother’s Day just days away, Lubbock businesses say the holiday rush doesn’t start this weekend — it starts months in advance.
At Las Brisas, Operating Partner Buddy Beach said planning for one of the restaurant’s busiest days of the year begins long before families start making brunch plans.
“We’ve been planning for this for probably, what, about a year,” Beach said.
Across town, florists are also working to make sure they’re ready when last-minute shoppers walk through the door.
Ryan Burt, co-owner of Box of Rain Floral, said preparations begin months out with wholesale orders and ramp up when delivery week arrives.
“Actually, it starts a few months out with getting orders placed with our wholesaler,” Burt said. “And then once we get the week of, when it gets here, we start our prep. The beginning of the week when we get all our flowers we have to sit here and process this whole area over here.”
Burt said the pace can be stressful as Mother’s Day approaches, but he’s grateful to play a small role in how families mark the holiday.
“It’s a lot that people come and choose to do business with us to celebrate their big day,” Burt said. “There are multiple places here, but choosing to do business with us at Box of Rain lets us make that moment even more special.”
For many, the holiday is also about new beginnings – including families celebrating a first Mother’s Day.
At Las Brisas, Beach said he hopes customers remember that heavy crowds can impact service, and a little patience goes a long way.
“It’s kind of like a train. Once we get going, we need to make sure that it keeps going,” Beach said. “So we need a little bit of patience, a little bit of understanding, and a whole lot of grace.”
Whether the plan includes flowers, brunch, or a phone call home, many people said the message is simple.
“I love her and thank her for everything she’s done for me,” one person said.
