LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The Salvation Army is teaming up with the United States Postal Service for their annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive.
Erica Perry with the Salvation Army said the event provides meals for families struggling to make ends meet.
“We are running very low on food. This helps us because there are so many families and individuals who come to us with food insecurities, and we are still dealing with that. It is a huge issue here in Lubbock, so this kind of fills that gap,” Perry said.
USPS and Affordable Moving steps in to help with annual event
The United States Postal Service is one of the partners on the event. Israel Martinez with USPS helps distribute the donation bags to homes across the city.
“I have over 800 stops on this route, so think about that, that is 800 bags we are pushing out, so that could be 800 families receiving food, so it’s a big deal,” Martinez said.
All residents need to do, whether you received a Salvation Army bag or not, is to put nonperishable food items in a bag and set the bag by their mailbox for pickup before their regular mail delivery.
Affordable Moving will be picking up the donations and driving them back to the Salvation Army’s food pantry.
The impact of your donations
Perry said the Salvation Army receives about 40,000 pounds of food through the event, which will go to their food pantry to be distributed.
“These families are going to be able to come to our location, build their box, so they are able to pick what their family likes and what they want to eat, then for the rest of the year, it’s pretty much divided out,” Perry said.
Martinez said every donation makes a difference.

“In today’s world it just feels good to give back, and to know that we are making an impact with these kids being out for summer break, a lot of these kids don’t have the same access to food they were getting in school, so to know we are making an impact in several homes around the community. It feels good, it’s a fulfilling feeling,” Martinez said.
Perry said every donation made is more than just food.
“All across Lubbock, not just one particular zip code are facing food insecurities, so we are thankful, and we couldn’t do this without them,” Perry said.
