CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A Gregory-Portland High School senior is recovering at home after receiving a surprise prom celebration inside her hospital room.

Kailani Vargas thought she would miss one of the biggest moments of her senior year after learning she would be hospitalized on prom night.

But with the help of her boyfriend, friends, family and care team at CHRISTUS Spohn, prom came to her.

Her hospital room was transformed with decorations, snacks, photos and even her prom dress — giving Vargas the chance to still experience a special night surrounded by the people closest to her.

The surprise celebration quickly turned an unexpected situation into a lasting memory.

Now back home and continuing her recovery, Vargas says she’s looking ahead to the future and hopes to one day become a NICU nurse.
