Four teams will advance to the baseball semi-final round of the Class 4A Division 1 Region 4 playoffs.
The winner of the Uvalde-Fredericksburg playoff series will take on the winner of the playoff series between the Corpus Christi Calallen Wildcats and the Needville Bluejays.
Game two of the Area, or regional quarter-final, series featuring the Uvalde Coyotes and the Fredericksburg Billies was scheduled to be played on May 8 at Somerset. If needed, game three was set for May 9.
The second game of the Calallen-Needville series was slated for May 8 at Victoria’s Riverside Stadium, while game three, if needed, was to be played Saturday at Victoria. Their series began on May 7.
Calallen and Needville won top honors in their respective districts.
The Wildcats went undefeated in District 31-4A play. They swept a best-of-three bi-district series against the Hidalgo Pirates, 13-0 and 15-0, in games played April 30 and May 1.
The Bluejays went unbeaten in District 29-4A competition and then posted a bi-district series sweep over the Port Lavaca Calhoun Sandcrabs, 17-0 and 13-3, in games played April 30 and May 1.
In the other part of the Region 4 bracket, the winner of the Area series between the San Antonio Davenport Wolves and the La Vernia Bears will advance to play the series winner between the Del Campo Ricebirds and the Corpus Christi Tuloso-Midway Warriors.
Game two of the series between Davenport and La Vernia was scheduled for May 8 at New Braunfels Longview High School. The third game, if needed, was to be played May 9 at Longview. Game one was set for May 7 at Longview.
Yoakum was to host the first game of the series between El Campo and Tuloso-Midway on May 7.
Game two was set for May 8 at Kennedy, while the third game, if needed, was to be played at Kenedy on May 9.
Davenport finished second in the District 26-4A race. The Wolves trounced Austin Eastside’s Panthers, 16-0 and 16-0, in their bi-district series.
La Vernia won runner-up honors in the District 28-4A race. The Navarro Panthers finished first.
In the bi-district round, the Bears topped the Somerset Bulldogs, 2-0 and 8-6, in an April 30 doubleheader.
El Campo’s Ricebirds finished second in the District 29-4A race behind Needville. The Ricebirds split the first two games of their bi-district series against the Beeville Jones Trojans, but went on to win game three in a 7-3, eight-inning thriller.
El Campo won game one, 4-2, while Jones won game two, 3-1. Tuloso-Midway finished second behind Calallen in the District 31-4A race. Their two district losses came against Calallen, 8-0 and 10-0.
The Warriors split a bi-district series against the District 32-4A champion Pharr Valley View Tigers.
After losing the opener, 6-5, T-M came back to win game two, 7-0, and game three, 10-0.
