Houston parking lot takeover with more than 100 vehicles leads to police chase

A parking lot takeover with more than 100 vehicles in north Houston ended in a police chase and the driver’s arrest late Thursday night, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office was called to a parking lot takeover at Interstate 45 and Greens Road around 10:45 p.m., Sgt. John Carroll with the sheriff’s office Traffic Crimes Unit told OnScene TV. Carroll did not provide a specific address, but that intersection is near the site of the former Greenspoint Mall.

Carroll said roughly 100 to 150 vehicles were involved in the parking lot takeover “doing donuts and crazy stuff.”

He said deputies attempted to stop a red Dodge Charger at the scene and the vehicle’s driver refused to stop. Deputies pursued the vehicle in a chase that stretched several miles and reached speeds of more than 100 mph, he said.

The vehicle ran out of gas in a Popeye’s restaurant in the vicinity. The driver fled the vehicle on foot and was arrested by deputies.

No injuries were reported, Carroll said. The vehicle was seized at the scene and went into the possession of the Harris County District Attorney’s Office to determine what happens to it.

There was no further information on the person arrested.
