The Dallas Renegades continued their spiral with perhaps their most crushing loss yet, falling in overtime to the Birmingham Stallions on Saturday night.
The Renegades coughed up a fourth-quarter lead before falling in the shootout-style overtime. Dallas has now lost four straight games after starting off its season 3-0.
With the game tied 10-10 in the fourth quarter, Dallas RB Ellis Merriweather broke off a 15-yard touchdown run to give the Renegades a 17-10 lead. But Birmingham, with former Browns and Eagles quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson under center, led a game-tying drive with under five minutes remaining.
Dallas put together a two-minute drill behind QB Austin Reed and was able to push into Birmingham territory, but a potential game-winning 53-yard field goal was blocked at the buzzer.
UFL overtime alternates two-point conversion attempts in a shootout-style format with the best team two-out-of-three claiming the win.
Dallas was unable to convert even one of its attempts in OT, coming up short on a Merriweather run and a sack of Reed.
Meanwhile Thompson-Robinson scrambled into the end zone on Birmingham’s first attempt, then found former NFL journeyman Jaydon Mickens in the end zone on the second attempt for the win.
The loss drops Dallas to 3-4 after its sterling start. Head coach Rick Neuheisel will look to right the ship before the Renegades next matchup on Friday against the Orlando Storm.
