The debate around who has the best burger in Texas will never be answered. Taste buds evolve, opinions change and so many people move to Texas every year that we’ll never get a consensus. However, a national chain with some notable Texas locations may have a winning bite.
When discussing fast-food restaurants in North Texas, several Redditors highlighted Griff’s Hamburgers as being better than In-N-Out, Burger King or McDonald’s, with one even saying it captures what pre-corporate Whataburger used to taste like. Griff’s Hamburgers was born in Wichita, Kansas, in 1960, but today has most of its locations in Texas. Still, San Antonians are in luck since the Alamo City has Texas’ lone Griff’s Hamburgers outside of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.
So, how does it taste?
If you go for the classic double giant cheeseburger (a No. 1), the name is a little misleading. Griff’s double patty burger with mustard, onions, lettuce, and tomato offers plenty of meat and veggies, but it isn’t as big as its name suggests. Regardless, when we visited the Pleasanton Road restaurant, the food was delivered fast – only a couple of minutes wait – it was warm and cheesy, which made for an excellent bite. It was stuffed with lettuce that fell out during the meal, so definitely ask for less if you’re not a fan. The burger did collapse in the latter half of the meal, but it was not overwhelmed by grease like other burger joints. Overall, a solid lunch, even if the fries were a little meh.

Atmosphere-wise, it’s perfect. Despite the busy road, the parking lot offers plenty of spaces for visitors as well as a drive-thru for on-the-go customers. Meanwhile, the inside offers plenty of tables for solo diners and groups, so sit and enjoy your meal. It was much cleaner and more organized than the overcrowded fast-food scene.
So, is it the No. 1 fast-food burger in Texas? I’m not sure, but I’d rather go back to Griff’s than one of the countless other fast-food burger huts.
Small tip: don’t arrive too early. I got there as they were putting the menu up on the board, so I had to blindly place my order without really knowing what I was getting. Luckily, it was delicious!
