Texans can’t go a full day without bringing up barbecue at least once. It’s everywhere, it’s all-consuming, and it’s delicious. People can’t stop talking about it, but which smokehouse are Texans talking about the most?
A new article from Fast Food Club answered that very question, looking at all 50 states and identifying the most popular barbecue joint, “the one barbecue restaurant in every state people can’t stop talking about.” As for the Lone Star State, Fast Food Club named Snow’s BBQ in Lexington, smack dab between Austin and College Station, as the most talked about barbecue joint in Texas.
“Snow’s BBQ in Lexington opens only on Saturday mornings, and people drive hours to be there when the gates open. Pitmaster Tootsie Tomanetz, who has been working the pits since the 1970s, is a living legend of Texas barbecue whose dedication to her craft is genuinely inspiring,” the article reads. “The brisket is widely considered among the very best in Texas — which means among the very best in the world. Ribs, pork shoulder and sausage round out a menu that disappears fast.”
Opened in 2003, Snow’s has become known to barbecue aficionados around the world, attracting everyone from Gordon Ramsay to Chet Garner, “The Daytripper,” and earning a reputation for fans lining up at 3 a.m., if not the Friday before. Since the smokehouse is only open on Saturdays, the lines are notoriously long, and Snow’s regularly sells out between noon and 1 p.m.
Texas Monthly ranked Snow’s the No. 1 barbecue joint in Texas in 2008 and 2017 – No. 2 in 2013 – but the restaurant all but has a space reserved on the magazine’s quadrennial best barbecue joints list. In terms of what to order, folks can’t go wrong with smoke-kissed brisket, meaty spareribs and pork steaks.
“Snow’s is a once-in-a-lifetime barbecue experience that every serious smoked meat lover needs to check off their list,” Fast Food Club wrote.
