The Laredo Police Department said the scene was active as of late Sunday afternoon, and that there were no survivors inside the boxcar investigated. Ages and genders were not yet determined as of Sunday evening. Union Pacific told Chron the railroad “is saddened by this incident and is working closely with law enforcement to investigate.”
The cause of death is unknown. High temperatures in Laredo on Sunday reached the high 90s, peaking at around 97 degrees.
Laredo is about 300 miles southwest of Houston. It’s just five miles across the Rio Grande from Mexico and the city of Nuevo Laredo. It’s unclear where the train originated and if it was heading anywhere after the discovery.
The Union Pacific railyard in Laredo is around 670 acres, one of the larger yards in the U.S. It sits about 15 miles north of downtown Laredo.
