There’s no question that a bit of a thrift store renaissance is underway in San Antonio. As prices soar, hitting pocketbooks harder and harder, thrift shopping has moved from a weekend hobby to a necessity for many families. And longtime contributor to the San Antonio thrift scene, Goodwill, is keeping in lock step with this increased demand.
The well-known second-hand retailer already has a 25 stores selling wares across the greater San Antonio area – and nearly another dozen donation stations – but it’s ushering in a new location. And it’s joining ranks of a booming thrift store market on the Northeast Side of the city.
An uprooted Walgreens at 6363 Rittiman Road will officially be home to this new Goodwill come Wednesday, May 13, sitting in a shopping center across from H-E-B undergoing a development boom.
“As we continue to grow across San Antonio, each new location represents an opportunity to connect more residents to meaningful employment,” said Carlos J. Contreras III, President & CEO of Goodwill San Antonio. “This store expands access to things people need every day, such as affordable goods, job opportunities, and the support to take the next step towards upward mobility. It’s also a great place to find hidden treasures.”
The new digs will be opening from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday (after Wednesday’s grand opening) and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. every Sunday. It’s an exciting addition to the Goodwill line up as it continues its Northeast expansion, particularly in the area flanked by Loop 410, I-35, I-10 and Loop 1604 in areas like Kirby and Windcrest. But it’ll be expanding in an increasingly competitive market on the Northeast Side.
However, any thrifting pro knows the more options in one area, the merrier. With each store being a treasure trove of mysterious finds, is one stop in a day ever really enough?
