VALLEY MILLS, Texas (KWTX) – A Central Texas police chief gave mothers a break on Mother’s Day, issuing warnings and photo opportunities instead of speeding tickets.
Valley Mills Police Chief Michael Hamilton pulled over mothers caught driving over the speed limit Sunday but gave them friendly warnings instead of citations. He also invited each mother to take a commemorative photo with him.
“I thought it would be a great gesture to recognize moms because they’re always on the go,” Hamilton said. “Their job never ends.”
Hamilton said the idea came to him as he was leaving home Sunday morning. He told his wife he would try to get off work early to help celebrate Mother’s Day.
“She stated, ‘it’s okay. My job is never done. I have plenty to keep me busy around here,’” Hamilton said.
Hamilton said he thought that was sad as he headed to work and decided to spend his day making other mothers’ days memorable.
“So, I decided instead of issuing speeding tickets to mothers caught driving a little fast on Mother’s Day, I would simply issue them a friendly warning and invite them for a picture that sort of marks a special occasion,” he said.
Hamilton said every mother smiled with relief and joy after he explained they were receiving a Mother’s Day warning for speeding.
“It was just a small way that I could show appreciation for all that mothers do and make their day a little more special and memorable,” he said.
Hamilton said in his 29 years as an officer, he has never done this before. The mothers gave permission for their photos to be posted on the department’s social media.
