EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — El Paso Locomotive FC has announced the signing of forward Cristo Fernández, pending league and federation approval, the club confirmed Tuesday.

Fernández, widely recognized for his role as Dani Rojas in the popular television series Ted Lasso, joins the USL Championship side after completing a two-month trial period. During that stretch, he trained regularly with the squad and featured in a preseason match against regional rival New Mexico United.

Head Coach Junior Gonzalez expressed optimism about the addition, highlighting both Fernández’s on-field potential and off-field presence.

“Cristo is a great addition to our roster, adding another attacking threat to our forward line,” Gonzalez said. “His passion for the game and leadership qualities for our locker room allow us to continue growing the positive culture we strive for as a club.”

Fernández’s journey to professional football has been anything but conventional. He began his career in the youth ranks of Tecos FC in Mexico but was forced to step away from the sport at age 15 due to injury. He later transitioned into acting, achieving international fame through Ted Lasso. Despite his success in entertainment, Fernández maintained a connection to the game.

“Fútbol has always been a huge part of my life and identity, and no matter where life has taken me, the dream of competing professionally never truly left my heart,” Fernández said. “I’m incredibly grateful to El Paso Locomotive FC for opening the doors and giving me the opportunity to compete from day one.”

He described his return to professional soccer as a testament to perseverance and belief.

“This journey back to professional fútbol is about believing in yourself, taking risks, and continuing to chase your dreams no matter how unexpected the path may be,” he added. “Because as we say in Mexico: hay que seguirle echando ganas Maybe I’m just a crazy man with crazy dreams so being here with the ‘Locos’ actually makes perfect sense. ¡Vamos Locos!”

Fernández’s signing adds depth to El Paso’s attacking options as the club continues to shape its 2026 roster.
