LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The Lubbock-Cooper Liberty Patriots (8-1, 3-0) are now one step closer to their first-ever district title. On Thursday night, they downed the Estacado Matadors (7-3, 3-1) on “Thursday Night Throwdown” 49-22.
RB Talon Wilcox scored first for Liberty, when he pushed the ball across the goal line- giving the Patriots a 7-0 lead. The Red, White, & Blue doubled its lead minutes later in the first with when QB Colton Bichard connected with WR Will Hutson, making it 14-0.
The Matadors responded early in the second when QB Jayric Ward found RB/WR Cedric Ross on a swing pass, cutting the lead down to 14-8. Liberty answered with a 25yd TD pass from Bichard to Pierce Fioroni- upping the score to 21-8. In the second half, Liberty went on a 28-15 run to secure the win.
The only thing separating the Patriots from an outright district title is a win at Levelland next Friday. Mathematically, a loss could result in a three-way tie. The Matadors will be off next week and will prepare for playoff competition.
