CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Corpus Christi City Council has approved a $1.2 million construction contract to improve security at the Civitan Service Center.
The project will install an electronic chain-link fence around the city facility, where officials say millions of dollars worth of vehicles and equipment are stored.
City leaders said the added security is intended to help prevent theft, vandalism and break-ins involving city-owned property.
“That facility houses a lot of critical city materials,” one city official said during Tuesday’s council meeting. “Just like any of us at our homes, we would want to protect things that we use and that we’ve invested in. The city’s no different.”
According to the city, more than 200 vehicles are located at the service center at any given time. Officials said much of the equipment stored there is essential for city operations and would be difficult to replace if damaged or stolen.
Construction on the fencing project is expected to be completed by November.
