EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — El Paso parents looking for help getting their young children ready for school can take part in a free early childhood development program that includes in-home visits from educators.
United Way of El Paso County, a non-profit organization, held a learning event on Friday to share information about its programs, including Parents as Teachers.
The program sends educators on house visits to teach parents about foundational skills children should know before kindergarten.
“You get assigned a parent educator, and part of that is that they kind of guide your family, maybe it’s your first kid, maybe it’s your third kid,” said Lauren Falco, director of marketing and engagement for United Way.
The Parents as Teachers program has four components: personal visits, group connections, screenings, and a resource network.
The program serves families with varying needs and offers services to parents with children from the prenatal period through kindergarten.
Parent educator Sheila Santiago said the program focuses on multiple areas of child development.
“So we do language, fine motor skills, growth motor skills, and also social-emotional, as I mentioned, training and stuff like that,” Santiago said.
The program is free for parents with children ages zero to five.
