EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — “We are in an active investigation, we are doing a thorough search to make sure there are no victims,” El Paso County ESD No. 1 Assistant Fire Chief Daniel Ames said, following a large house fire that broke out on Wednesday evening, May 13.

A multi-agency response helped contain a fire that destroyed a “prefabricated home” in Horizon City, Ames said.

In a video posted to social media, large black plumes of smoke and flames can be seen coming from the structure along Desert Mesa.

Multiple fire crews are on scene battling the blaze. In one shot of the video, you can see a firefighter atop of a fire ladder, spraying the area.

Ames told the media that firefighters were dispatched at 7:32 p.m. to the intersection of Cow Tongue and Desert Mesa Drives. When crews arrived, the house was completely engulfed in flames.

According to the Horizon City Fire Department, firefighters responded to a Condition 2 fire and crews, including a fire marshal, were on scene.

A prefabricated home is a residential structure, partially constructed off-site, then brought to the site to be fully constructed.

Ames said that crews got the fire under control. 15 units and 35 firefighters responded to the incident.

“Family has been made with the contact, and that’s undetermined, right now,” Ames said when asked if the family had been contacted.

Horizon City Police Officer Morales said Horizon, El Paso County Fire, Montana Vista, Socorro and Clint Fire departments have responded to help with the blaze.

Ames said the home is unlivable and crews are still searching for hotspots in the area. A fire unit will be on scene until the investigation is complete.

The fire has been contained and the investigation is ongoing.

The Horizon City Police Department is asking motorists to avoid the area of Cow Tongue and Desert Mesa Drives.

No firefighters were hurt during the incident, according to the Horizon Fire Department.

It is unclear how the fire started.
