LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Unseasonably hot weather will continue across West Texas on Thursday, with afternoon highs climbing into the upper 90s to near 100°.

A record high of 100° at Childress, set in 2022, is within reach. The record high at Lubbock is also 100°, but that mark is less likely to be reached.
The heat, combined with ongoing drought conditions, will keep fire danger elevated across the region. A Fire Danger Statement is in effect for the entire area as hot, dry and breezy conditions persist.

Scattered, high-based thunderstorms are expected to develop Thursday afternoon, with the most likely timing after 4 p.m. Storms may move from eastern New Mexico into portions of the Caprock through the evening.

A few storms could become severe, producing damaging wind gusts near or above 60 mph. Brief downpours are possible, but rainfall is expected to be spotty because storms will be high-based and much of the rain may evaporate before reaching the ground.
