Plano residents 65 and older have a new, on-demand way to get around, and the service is free through June 4.
The city of Plano launched Plano Rides by Via, an on-demand microtransit for those 65 and older, in hopes of providing the city’s older population with reliable transportation that keeps them connected to daily activities and essential services. The free fare is an introductory offer to help residents acquaint themselves with the service.
“The city introduced a free month of service as a way for the community to learn the service and try it out for themselves,” Amanda McNew, Plano’s director of media relations, said.
Since its May 4 start, Plano Rides has provided more than 300 rides throughout the community and logged over 700 app installations, according to the city. The city said, of riders who submitted reviews for the service, 98.1% gave five-star reviews.
“Plano Rides is already helping residents get where they need to go safely, affordably and conveniently,” Plano Mayor John Muns said in a news release. “Whether it’s a doctor’s appointment, a trip to the grocery store or a visit to a recreation center or library, this service is creating more opportunities for older adults to stay active and connected in Plano.”
After the free ride offer ends, fares will be $1.50 per ride or $3 for a day pass, and $1 per additional passenger. The city plans on expanding services to include other residents in the future, but no exact timeline has been given.
Wheelchair accessible vehicles are available upon request. The transit operates Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and weekends from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Plano Rides provides services anywhere within Plano, including a 1.5-mile buffer zone outside of the city limits.
