As progress continues on Texas’ largest state highway loop, weekend commuters or shoppers in San Antonio may want to brace for some serious highway headaches. The Texas Department of Transportation is shutting down all lanes of I-10 for nearly 24 hours during peak shopping times this weekend.
The eastbound lanes of I-10, where it meets Loop 1604, will be closed at 9 p.m. on Friday, May 15, and will stay closed until roughly 4 p.m. on Saturday. Drivers heading back toward town from La Cantera or The RIM could see significant delays heading back home if they live inside Loop 1604.
For years, TxDOT has been overhauling Loop 1604 in a massive 1.4 billion dollar project. That means transforming the ousted four-leaf clover design at the intersection of I-10 and Loop 1604 on the Far Northside into a series of stacked direct connector ramps.
To accomplish this, many shutdowns have been needed over the years, much to the chagrin of Northside shoppers and drivers.
Now, TxDOT is closing all the main lanes of I-10 East where it crosses under Loop 1604. Drivers heading toward town from La Cantera or The RIM will have to exit for the access road, hook a right on 1604, take a turn around and use that frontage road to get back to I-10.
Those heading away from town, in the westbound lanes, should also be aware the left lane will be closed. Every lane counts on that stretch of I-10, especially during busy weekend traffic, so brace for a major slowdown this weekend as well.
