AUSTIN, Texas — A 6-month-old puppy named Silkworm is the last of the 19 neglected dogs from Bastrop County still searching for a home nearly a month after their rescue.

The Austin Humane Society announced Friday that all of Silkworm’s littermates and family members have been adopted since the group arrived at the shelter in late September. The 9-pound puppy, nicknamed “Silkie Sue” by staff, remains available for adoption.

“Silkworm is a doll of a puppy with the best disposition,” the shelter said on Facebook. Staff members compared the small dog to Falkor, the luck dragon from the 1984 film “The NeverEnding Story.”

The dogs were rescued Sept. 30 from a property in Bastrop County by the Austin Humane Society and Bastrop County Animal Services. The animals had lived primarily outdoors and suffered from flea infestations, internal parasites and skin, eye and ear infections due to neglect, shelter officials said.

All 19 dogs were small mixed breeds, believed to be French Bulldog and Pug mixes.

Silkworm is crate-trained, learning basic commands like “sit,” and enjoys cuddling, according to shelter staff.

Her adoption fee is $300. All dogs are spayed or neutered, microchipped, treated for parasites and receive vaccinations before adoption.

The shelter encourages potential adopters to visit in person.
