Ganado ISD announced Thursday evening that all district campuses would close Friday due to a “significant number of absences due to illness,” particularly at Ganado Elementary.
According to the district, more than 90 elementary students had either missed school or been sent home sick since Wednesday.
“Parents, we sincerely apologize for the short notice, but please understand that we highly value the welfare of all students,” the district wrote in a statement shared on social media.
While the district did not specify the illness, ABC13 reported that a stomach bug had spread through the elementary school. The district’s Superintendent Jonathan Szymanski also told the outlet the school would remain closed so the bug could run its course and staff can deep clean classrooms ahead of finals next week.

Ganado ISD, located southwest of Houston between Houston and Victoria, serves roughly 740 students across its elementary, junior high and high school campuses, according to district information.
District officials said all classrooms would be sanitized over the weekend before students return Monday, May 18.
“Each year, we build our calendar in anticipation of such days,” the district added.
The closure comes less than a week before the district’s final day of the 2025-26 school year, which is scheduled for Thursday, May 21.
