METRO Police say an officer fatally shot a suspect who was armed with a knife near the Houston Botanic Garden Saturday morning.

The shooting happened on Park Place Boulevard near Botanic Lane around 10:20 a.m.

METRO police said the incident started when a bus driver reported a suspicious person holding a knife.

“The operator did not allow the individual to board the bus and contacted Bus Control,” METRO said in a statement issued prior to the suspect’s death.

According to METRO, a supervisor and METRO Police were sent to the scene.

“During an interaction with responding personnel, shots were fired by law enforcement,” METRO said. “The suspect sustained an injury to the leg and received immediate medical attention on scene.”

A tourniquet was applied to the suspect’s leg and they were taken to a hospital. The suspect later died, METRO Police said.

No officers, METRO staff or customers were hurt in the incident.

“Safety remains METRO’s top priority,” METRO said. “We remain committed to providing a safe, secure and reliable transit system for our customers and employees and are fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation.”

“METRO Police responded to an incident this morning at approximately 10:45 a.m. near Park Place Blvd. and Findlay St. involving a suspicious person and an officer-involved shooting.

“Preliminary information indicates that a METRO bus operator observed an individual at a bus stop holding a knife. The operator did not allow the individual to board the bus and contacted Bus Control. A METRO supervisor and METRO Police officers responded to the scene.

“During the interaction with responding personnel, shots were fired by law enforcement. The suspect sustained an injury to the leg and received immediate medical aid on scene, including the application of a tourniquet, before being transported to a hospital by EMS.

“A detour has been put in place while law enforcement secured the scene and conducted the investigation. No METRO customers or employees were injured during the incident.

“Safety remains METRO’s top priority. We remain committed to providing a safe, secure and reliable transit system for our customers and employees and are fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation.

“The investigation remains active, and additional information will be shared as appropriate.”
