Texas is in prime position to successfully defend its national softball championship, but the Longhorns will need to navigate perhaps the most balanced and unpredictable field in NCAA history to do it.

Texas, which took the No. 2 overall seed into regional play, opened against Wagner on Friday in the Austin Regional, and promptly disposed of the Seahawks 9-1 in five innings.
Regional play started Friday, with the top 16 seeds hosting four-team double-elimination brackets. The eight teams that get through super regionals the following week will play in the World Series, which starts May 28 at Devon Park in Oklahoma City.
Texas was one of a handful of area schools in action on Saturday. Here is a roundup of those results:
Texas 9, Wisconsin 0 (F/6)
Texas (2-0) blanked Wisconsin (1-1) in front of its home fans. The offense struck early and often, scoring at least two runs in each of the first three innings. Teagan Kavan led the way on the mound for Texas, throwing five shutout innings. She struck out eight, walked one and allowed only one hit. Kayden Henry walked the game off via run rule with a two-run blast in the sixth inning.

Texas will play again at 12 p.m. Sunday against either Wisconsin, Baylor or Wagner depending on Saturday evening’s elimination games.
Oklahoma State 7, Stanford 2
Oklahoma State (2-0) cruised again while hosting the Stillwater Regional with a 7-2 win over Stanford (1-1). Home runs from Rosie Davis, Karli Godwin and Tia Warsop powered the Cowgirls’ offense. Ruby Meyland threw a complete game for Oklahoma State.
OSU will face either Stanford, Eastern Illinois or Princeton at 3 p.m. Sunday depending on Saturday evening’s elimination games.
