COLLEGE STATION — Texas A&M softball “battled” according to head coach Trisha Ford, but they didn’t know how to close Saturday afternoon’s game against Arizona State.
The Aggies fell 4-3 to the Big 12 Champions after a sloppy seventh inning. A&M had a 3-2 lead going into the final frame but Arizona State center fielder Kaylee Pond and third baseman Emily Schepp fired RBI singles to take the lead. A&M had a chance to tie the game with right fielder Franke Vrazel at first but the Aggies didn’t have enough power over Sun Devils right-handed pitcher Kenzie Brown who had six strikeouts and allowed four hits through seven innings.

A&M’s righty Sidne Peters returned to the circle after throwing seven strikeouts through three innings against UConn the previous day. The junior fired off 105 pitches and four strikeouts through 6⅓ innings.
The Aggies scored first in the bottom of the first on first baseman Micaela Wark’s two-run homer. But ASU returned the favor and tied it with a home run from first baseman Katie Chester to deep center field.

A&M didn’t score again until center fielder Kelsey Mathis’ groundout to first scored pinch runner Hailey Golden in the fourth. The Aggies had a runner in scoring position for two straight innings, but they couldn’t cross home.
While Brown kept A&M’s runners at bay, Peters continued to battle and work the Aggies out of jams, but in the seventh inning after the first RBI single from ASU tied the game, she went to reliever Taylor Pannell.

“She led the nations in saves last year so I feel like when it comes to nerves, she (Pannell) has those under control,” For said postgame.
But Pannell hit a Sun Devil and gave up a run on the second batter she faced that gave ASU a 4-3 lead. The Aggies stayed aggressive at the plate but Dement popped up for the first out and even with Vrazel on first, third baseman Kennedy Powell and pinch hitter Maddie Sauni struck out swinging.
Since A&M lost, they have to play the winner of McNeese and UConn at 7 p.m. Saturday night. If the Aggies win, they will face Arizona State again at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Dement popped out to lead off. Maddie Sauni pinch hits for Allen and struck out swinging. Vrazel walked to first with two outs for Powell who struck out swinging.

Despite movement in the bullpen at various points in the game, Peters stays in the circle. ASU leads off the inning with a double and slides into third. Mathis catches the ball off the wall and Edwards tagged Ulrich sliding into second, who was called safe. Texas A&M is challenging the call and after review the call stands. Ho-Ching’s sacrifice bunt moves pinch runner Nehanda Lewis to third. Peters hit Windle to have runners on the corners which brings out Ford for her first coaches visit. Pond’s RBI single tied the game and Taylor Pannell comes to relive Peters. Pannell hit Swan in the back and she takes a walk to first to load the bases. Schepp slaps an infield single and A&M gets the force out at second, but runners are on the corners for Chester who flied out to end the inning.
Perez is hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Wark popped up for the first out. Kowalewski swung at the first pitch and the Sun Devils get Perez out at second but can’t turn two on the throw back to first. Annsley Groce pinch ran for Kowalewski who has to put back on her catchers gear. Mathis swung at a low pitch but Groce slides into scoring position; Mathis grounds out to end the inning.

Peters walked lead off batter Schepp but Vrazel caught Chester’s popup for the first out. Mejia’s flyout is caught by Allen. Powell calls off Peters and Wark to catch a popup to end the inning.
Allen flied out to right field. Vrazel’s base hit get past the shortstop for Brown’s third allowed hit. Powell blooped a single into the right field gap and Vrazel is safe at third. Edwards lined to the second baseman and tags Powell on her way to second to end the inning.

Ho-Ching ripped an infield play that bounces off Peters’ and Dement hustled to try and throw out the Sun Devil but she can’t beat the throw. Texas A&M challenges the call but it is confirmed. Powell continues to make plays and catches another flyout in foul territory. Peters walked her second batter and Swan grounds out to third and Powell makes the throw to first to make the double-play.
Perez opens the inning with another walk and is swapped for pinch runner Hailey Golden. Wark popped out to first base and Golden stays. Kowalewski’s pop up to shallow right field is lost in the sun and she advances to second, while Golden pushes it to third when the throw from right field goes wide and is called safe. Arizona State is challenging that Golden was safe and after a review, the call stands. Mathis’ sacrifice hit sends in Golden and for the Aggies to retake lead, 3-2. Dement swings at the first pitch she sees and breaks her bat in the process.

Schepp leads off the inning with a stand-up double that landed in the left-center gap. Chester takes to first. Peters settles in and throws a few strikes before Mejia flew out to third. Acuna holds off another attempt to bunt and is struck out swinging. Ulrich flied out to third to end the threat.
Vrazel leads off the inning with a groundout to first and Powell flied out to shallow left field. Edwards grounded out to end the inning. Brown threw 10 pitches during the outing.

Ho-Ching flied out to second to end her eight pitch at-bat. Windle struck out swinging but Pond is hit by a pitch and is the second Sun Devil to reach base all game but Swan flied out to second.
Using a drop ball that painted the corner, Mathis struck out swinging and so did Dement; Allen struck out looking.

Schepp leads off the inning with a single that Vrazel couldn’t scoop up on her dive. Chester sends a homer to deep centerfield to tie the game 2-2. Mejia popped up to shallow centerfield for the first out. Peters dealt back-to-back strikeouts to get Acuna and Ulrich.
Powell struck out swinging. Edwards grounded out to first. Perez took a leisurly stroll to first base for Brown’s first walk of the game. On a 1-1 pitch, Wark sent a shot just past the right field wall for an early 2-0 lead. Kowalewski flied out to third base to end the inning.

Windle and Pond lined out to center field to open the game. Swan popped out to first to end the inning. The Sun Devils are aggressive at the plate early, swinging often before taking a ball.
