Beach Rescue Launches Summer Safety Push on Padre Island

Corpus Christi Beach Rescue kicked off Beach Safety Week with rip current lessons, safety demos, and tips to help beachgoers stay safe.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — As more families head to the beach for summer fun, Corpus Christi Beach Rescue is making sure safety comes first on Padre Island.

Beach Rescue crews gathered at Windward Ellis to kick off Beach Safety Week with live demonstrations, giveaways, and hands-on lessons designed to help beachgoers stay safe in the water. Officials focused heavily on teaching people how to spot rip currents, understand beach warning flags, and recognize when conditions may be too dangerous to swim.

Officials say many swimmers misunderstand how rip currents work. While they may look harmless from shore, the fast-moving channels of water can quickly pull swimmers away from the beach.

“A really important factor whenever it comes to rip currents is recognizing that it won’t pull you under the water, but it’s going to pull you out to the very deep parts of the water,” one Beach Rescue official said.

Crews also explained the importance of staying calm if caught in a rip current and swimming parallel to shore instead of fighting directly against the current.

“The most important thing is to recognize that you are caught in a rip current and know that you need to swim out to the sides to physically swim out of that rip current, and then you can parallel swim yourself back to the shore,” officials explained.

Beach Rescue officials encourage visitors to always check surf conditions and beach warning flags before entering the water. They say taking a few extra moments to understand the conditions could prevent a dangerous situation and help families enjoy a safer summer along the coast.
